Television preacher Gene Scott made a bid to purchase the church, adamantly declaring “over my dead body will a wrecking ball know ever hit the front of that church or tear down those signs.” The plans fell through and the church was torn down in 1988. Controversy and disputes ensued when deals were made to sell and raze the land. The Bible Institute, better known now as BIOLA, moved to La Mirada in 1959 but the church remained open despite dropping attendance. The signs were first dedicated in 1935 by the congregation of the Church of the Open Door on the evangelical Bible Institute’s campus. Although the signs are instantly recognizable, few know the origins of the signs or why they have been a fixture in the downtown skyline for almost 80 years. The signs sat there until 1989 when they made a half mile trek east on South Hope Street to the current location.
